After putting on my teflon armor, my fire proof undies, covering my head in my best layers of flame free hats and making sure I am well behind a wall for safety–I have something to confess that might get me killed. Here goes:
I don’t get the big deal about the new Dr. Who series.
Oh, I thought the actor who played the very first Dr. Who was rather good to eyeball and I enjoyed looking at him. Christopher Eccleston was a rather decent actor actually and I don’t know why–but I thought he was a bit dreamy too.
They paired him with an actress/companion Billie Piper, who played Rose, that I am sure could have done a lot better with a different role. At that time, I didn’t think the character Rose, suited her very well. My suspicions and fears were correct when Billie Piper went on to star in Secret Diary of a Call Girl, proving to me that given the right role, she could shine. I just didn’t feel like her role as Rose really let her do that.
Then the inevitable happened. They replaced the doctor’s actor. It was a nod as well as salute to the original series–which I think is great, trying to keep things on the semi-same path as the original–but…(There’s always a butts) I had a hard time finding much about the series to keep me and draw me after Christopher Eccleston was replaced with David Tennant. David reminds me of one of those crazy little wide eyed monkeys. I just want to pet him and give him some grubs, maybe some bananas, scritch behind his little ears. ..Where was I? Oh right-
I really wasn’t into David Tennant as an actor and replacement for Dr. Who at all, making it even more difficult for me to look past amazingly cheesy lines, effects and the occasional plot line that felt like they walked right off the set of The Bold and The Beautiful.
And yet, ladies–so many of you that I read or blog with who watch this show (Hi Eve!) wrote beautiful posts filled with swooning as well as deep bosomy sighs with all sorts of dreamy commentary, so I figure that I am just missing something.
So fans of the new Doctor Who series fille me in, please? Why does it work for you? Why is this show such a hit with you? What do you enjoy about it?
I’m willing to give it another shot, but I need some convincing.

Admittedly, I am not as huge a geek as you or others when it comes to this particular fandom. I did not watch the original Doctor Who series. Either because I was too young or because I had just never heard about it; maybe both.
However, I too am absolutely in love with David Tennant. He made me love the Doctor Who series. Christopher Eccleston didn’t really do it for me. Maybe it’s a difference in tastes. I like me the skinny, pretty boys. Other women prefer the big beefcakes. I also like the goofy, crazy wide-eyed monkey thing that you refer to. It’s true, and I love it. Any more than that I can’t tell you. The plots, satire, humor and so forth are just so captivating, to me.
“Maybe it’s a difference in tastes.”
It probably is! For me, there was something more rugged and more..Dr. Who-ish about Christopher. David seems…delicate. Like he belongs behind a computer desk making PEWPEW! noises.
That’s my thing though, and maybe that’s coloring my current judgment of the series.
I too, like the little monkey. He’s cute and you go awwww. But for me, I can’t see lil’ monkey saving the universe. Maybe I’ll do better giving the series another chance with the new Dr.!
Been a while since I watched Dr. Who a lot, Tom Baker was the actor playing the role when I watched it the most. When I have seen any of the latest shows it just seems so cheesy and over the top, maybe it has always been that way but it doesn’t have the appeal it once did.
Only seen a couple of episodes featuring the two later actors you mentioned.
